If you're deciding where to sell vintage clothes online in the US, six sites do most of the business: Depop, Etsy, eBay, Poshmark, Grailed and Mercari. Fees range from a few percent to 20% of the sale, so the same jacket can leave you very different amounts. The buyers differ just as much, and that often decides the price you can get.
Type a price into the calculator above. It applies each site's standard fees to the same sale and sorts them by what you'd receive.
What each site pays you on a $40 piece
A lot of vintage tees, sweatshirts and dresses sell somewhere around $40:
| Platform | Fees | You keep | Share kept |
|---|---|---|---|
| Depop | $1.77 | $38.23 | 96% |
| Mercari | $4.00 | $36.00 | 90% |
| Etsy | $4.25 | $35.75 | 89% |
| Grailed | $4.29 | $35.71 | 89% |
| eBay | $5.84 | $34.16 | 85% |
| Poshmark | $8.00 | $32.00 | 80% |
A $40.00 sale, standard settings, free shipping to the buyer, no sales tax, no ads.
Depop charges US sellers no selling fee, only payment processing, so a $40 piece costs you $1.77. Poshmark takes 20%, which is $8.00 on the same sale. The others sit in between, at roughly 10% to 15%.
What each site pays you on a $150 piece
For a leather jacket, a designer piece or a rare band tee, the gaps get bigger in dollars:
| Platform | Fees | You keep | Share kept |
|---|---|---|---|
| Depop | $5.40 | $144.60 | 96% |
| Etsy | $14.70 | $135.30 | 90% |
| Mercari | $15.00 | $135.00 | 90% |
| Grailed | $19.22 | $130.78 | 87% |
| eBay | $20.80 | $129.20 | 86% |
| Poshmark | $30.00 | $120.00 | 80% |
A $150.00 sale, standard settings, free shipping to the buyer, no sales tax, no ads.
At this price Grailed's commission has moved up from 6% to 9%, plus processing. Poshmark keeps $30.00. If a piece reliably sells for more on one site, a higher fee there can still leave you ahead, so compare likely sale prices as well as fees.
Depop: vintage and streetwear buyers
Depop is built around young, style-led buyers, and vintage is one of its biggest categories. Y2K, 90s sportswear, band tees and one-off pieces do well, and good photos matter a lot. US sellers pay no selling fee since July 2024, just 3.3% plus $0.45 processing, plus 12% if the sale came through a boosted listing. The Depop fee calculator covers boosting and shipping.
Etsy: for pieces 20 years or older
On Etsy, "vintage" has a fixed meaning: the item has to be at least 20 years old. So a 2015 hoodie doesn't qualify, but a 1990s windbreaker does. Buyers there tend to search by decade, label or fabric, and they'll read a long description. You pay $0.20 to list, then 6.5% of the sale and 3% plus $0.25 for processing once it sells. If the buyer came from one of Etsy's Offsite Ads, there's an extra fee on top. The Etsy fee calculator splits it out line by line.
eBay: the most buyers, and the best price check
Workwear, old denim, designer labels, odd band merch: eBay has buyers for all of it. Its sold listings also show what a piece actually went for, which helps whichever site you end up using. For most clothing the fee is 13.6% of the whole order (shipping and sales tax count) plus $0.40, or $0.30 if the order is $10 or under. Shipping, tax and Promoted Listings are all in the eBay fee calculator.
Poshmark, Grailed and Mercari
- Poshmark is strong for brand-name clothing, shoes and bags, and its buyers search by label and size. It takes 20% from $15 up, or $2.95 under $15. Shipping is simple, since the buyer pays for a prepaid label.
- Grailed focuses on menswear, streetwear and designer pieces, and vintage designer sells well there. It takes 6% under $120 and 9% from $120, plus payment processing.
- Mercari sells a bit of everything. It takes 10% of the item plus any shipping the buyer pays, with no fixed fee.
For two of these side by side, see Depop vs Poshmark and Depop vs Mercari.
The best place to sell vintage clothing, by type
- Y2K, 90s, band tees and streetwear: Depop.
- Pieces 20 years or older, especially older eras: Etsy or eBay.
- Vintage designer and menswear: Grailed or eBay.
- Brand-name vintage in common sizes: Poshmark.
- Mixed or everyday pieces: Mercari or eBay.
Many sellers list the same piece on two or three sites. If you do, price with each site's fee in mind and end the other listings as soon as it sells.
Selling vintage in the UK
UK sellers have two free options. Vinted charges sellers nothing, and eBay UK charges private sellers no final value fee, so a £40 piece pays you £40.00 on either. On Depop UK you'd keep £38.54 after processing. On Vinted and eBay the buyer pays a fee at checkout instead, which the Vinted fee calculator and Vinted vs eBay comparison explain.
Where to sell vintage clothes offline: shops and markets
Vintage shops will sometimes buy pieces outright or take them on consignment. Selling to a shop is quick, but they need margin to resell, so expect less than a buyer online would pay. Vintage markets and fairs let you sell in person with no platform fee, though there's usually a pitch fee and a day of your time.
How to sell vintage clothes online for more
- Check sold prices. Search sold listings on eBay and Depop for the same brand, era and style.
- Measure everything. Vintage sizes run differently from modern ones. Pit-to-pit and length measurements cut down on returns.
- Show flaws clearly. Photograph stains, holes and fading. Buyers of vintage expect some wear, but not surprises.
- Use the right words. Era, brand, fabric and style terms help buyers find a piece.
- Price with the fee in mind. Run your price through the calculator above for each site you're considering.
Common questions
Where is the best place to sell vintage clothes?
For trend-led vintage like Y2K and 90s pieces, Depop has the strongest audience and low fees for US sellers. For older vintage, Etsy and eBay reach more specialist buyers. For vintage designer, try Grailed.
Which app has the lowest fees for vintage?
In the US, Depop usually does: a $40 sale costs you $1.77 in processing, with no selling fee. In the UK, Vinted and eBay (for private sellers) charge sellers nothing.
Can I sell vintage on Etsy?
Yes, if the item is at least 20 years old, which is Etsy's definition of vintage. Newer second-hand clothing isn't allowed in Etsy's vintage category.
Is it worth selling vintage on several sites?
Often, yes. Listing on two or three sites reaches more buyers. Keep track so you can remove a piece everywhere once it sells.
