Etsy charges digital downloads exactly the same fees as physical items: $0.20 to list, 6.5% of the price, and 3% plus $0.25 for payment processing in the US. A $10 printable costs $1.40 in fees, so you keep $8.60.
The calculator above starts at $10 with no shipping, so it works as an Etsy fee calculator for digital products straight away. Change the region if your shop's bank account is in the UK, Canada or Australia.
Etsy digital download fees
Etsy's fee policy doesn't treat digital products as a separate category. A PDF planner, an SVG cut file or a Lightroom preset pays:
- Listing fee: $0.20 USD per listing, renewed every four months.
- Transaction fee: 6.5% of the item price. With no shipping, that's the whole base.
- Payment processing: depends on your bank account's country. For US shops, 3% plus $0.25 per order.
- Offsite Ads: 15% or 12% if the sale came from an Etsy ad on another website.
- Regulatory operating fee: only in some countries, such as the UK (0.48%) and Canada (0.50%).
The only real difference from a physical shop is that there's no shipping charge, so there's no shipping in any fee base. That keeps the percentage fees small. It doesn't help with the fixed ones.
Why cheap printables lose so much to fees
For a US shop, $0.45 of every sale is fixed: the $0.20 listing fee and the $0.25 processing charge. On a $3 download, that alone is 15% of the price before any percentage fee. All in, a $3 sale costs $0.73 and leaves you $2.27, which means Etsy takes nearly a quarter.
| Sale price | Total fees | Fees as % of price | You receive |
|---|---|---|---|
| $2.00 | $0.64 | 32.0% | $1.36 |
| $3.00 | $0.74 | 24.5% | $2.27 |
| $5.00 | $0.93 | 18.5% | $4.08 |
| $10.00 | $1.40 | 14.0% | $8.60 |
| $15.00 | $1.88 | 12.5% | $13.13 |
| $25.00 | $2.83 | 11.3% | $22.18 |
Default settings, no sales tax, no optional fees.
The share drops fast as the price climbs. At $10, fees are 14%. At $25, a little over 11%. If most of your catalog is under $5, those fixed costs are the first thing to look at.
The listing fee on every download
Digital listings are normally set up with plenty in stock, since you never run out of a file. When one sells, Etsy renews the listing automatically and charges $0.20 again. So each download you sell costs $0.20 in listing fees, not just the first. A listing that sells 200 times in a year runs to $40 in listing fees.
Listings that don't sell still renew every four months unless you turn auto-renew off. That's $0.60 a year for each idle listing, which is worth knowing if you upload large numbers of designs.
Bundles lower the fixed fees
Three $4 printables sold separately to three buyers cost $0.83 each in US fees, $2.49 in total. The same three files sold as one $12 bundle cost $1.59. That's $0.90 more in your pocket for the same files, because you pay the fixed $0.45 once instead of three times.
This is the most direct way to cut Etsy printable fees without changing what you sell.
Offsite Ads on digital products
Offsite Ads hit digital sellers hard because they come on top of fees that are already a high share of the price. On a $10 download that came through an Offsite Ad at 15%, fees jump from $1.40 to $2.90, which is 29% of the sale.
If your shop has sold less than $10,000 USD in the last 365 days, you can opt out. Above that, Offsite Ads are compulsory at 12% and you can't opt back out, even if sales later fall.
Digital download fees outside the US
Each country's processing fee and any regulatory fee or VAT change the numbers. On a 10-unit sale in local currency with no Offsite Ad:
- US ($10): $1.40 (3% + $0.25 processing)
- UK (£10): £1.74 with VAT on fees, £1.45 without (4% + £0.20 processing, 0.48% regulatory operating fee)
- Canada (C$10): C$1.53 before any sales tax on fees (0.50% regulatory operating fee)
- Australia (A$10): A$1.66 with GST on fees, A$1.51 without (10% GST on fees unless Etsy has your ABN)
The listing fee is always $0.20 USD converted to your currency, which is why it's a little different in each column. Canadian shops pay 4% rather than 3% processing on orders from outside Canada and the US, and Australian shops pay 4% on any order from abroad. For digital files that sell worldwide, that's a large share of orders, and the calculator's domestic rate will understate it. UK shops have more detail on the Etsy UK fee calculator.
Etsy profit calculator for digital products
With no stock or postage, profit on a download is close to the payout. Take away the costs that do exist:
- Font, clip art or mockup licences used in the design
- Software subscriptions
- Etsy Ads spend, if you run on-site ads
- The 2.5% currency conversion fee, if you price in a different currency from your bank account
Spread the fixed costs over your monthly sales to get a per-download figure and enter it as your item cost. The calculator then shows profit after costs, plus margin and ROI, for each sale.
Print on demand profit on Etsy
Print on demand isn't a digital product as far as fees go. It's a physical item, so the shipping you charge goes into the 6.5% transaction fee and the processing fee base. A $25 shirt with $5 shipping pays fees on $30, not $25. Your print provider's charge for making and posting the item comes out of what's left. To see your real print on demand profit, use the main Etsy fee calculator with your shipping price and enter the provider's invoice as your item cost.
Common questions
Does Etsy charge less for digital downloads?
No. The rates are the same as for physical items. You just don't pay fees on shipping because there isn't any.
How much does Etsy take from a $5 digital download?
For a US shop, about 93 cents with no Offsite Ad, roughly 18.5% of the price.
Is there a fee every time a printable sells?
Yes. The 6.5% and processing fees apply to every order, and the listing renews for $0.20 after each sale.
What's the cheapest way to sell printables on Etsy?
Price high enough that the fixed $0.45 isn't a big share, bundle related files, and opt out of Offsite Ads while you're under the $10,000 threshold if the 15% fee would wipe out your margin.
