On Etsy US you pay three fees on a normal sale: $0.20 to list the item, 6.5% of the item price plus shipping once it sells, and 3% plus $0.25 for payment processing on the order total. Sell a $30 item with $5 shipping and those add up to $3.78. You keep $31.23, and the postage label comes out of that.
To calculate Etsy fees on your own prices, type them into the calculator above. Switch the region to Canada or Australia if that's where your shop's bank account is, since the processing fee and other charges change with it.
How much does Etsy take?
Most US orders lose roughly 10% to 13% of the item price to fees once the fixed parts are included. Lower prices lose a bigger share because $0.45 of the fees (the $0.20 listing and the $0.25 processing charge) doesn't shrink with the price. If the sale came from an Offsite Ad, add another 12% or 15%.
| Fee | How it is charged (US) |
|---|---|
| Listing fee | $0.20 USD per listing, charged again when a listing renews or sells another unit |
| Transaction fee | 6.5% of the item price plus shipping |
| Payment processing fee | 3% of the full order total (item, shipping and tax) |
| Payment processing fee (fixed part) | $0.25 per order |
| Offsite Ads fee | your chosen rate, charged on the item price plus shipping (maximum $100). Only when a sale comes from an Etsy ad on another site. Capped at $100 USD per order. |
Etsy transaction fee
The transaction fee is 6.5% of the price shown on the listing, plus whatever you charge for shipping and gift wrap. Paid personalization counts as part of the price. For US sellers, the sales tax Etsy collects is not included in this fee.
Because shipping is in the base, raising the shipping charge and lowering the item price by the same amount doesn't save anything. A $25 item with $10 shipping and a $35 item shipped free both pay $2.28 in transaction fees.
Etsy payment processing fee
For shops with a US bank account, Etsy Payments charges 3% plus $0.25 per order. Unlike the transaction fee, this one is charged on the gross order amount, which includes shipping and any sales tax the buyer pays. On a $35 order with $2.80 tax, the processing fee is 3% of $37.80 plus $0.25, which is $1.38.
Refunds can change it. Give a partial refund and Etsy works the processing fee out again. But when Etsy pays the refund itself under its Protection Program, you don't get that processing fee back.
Etsy listing fee
Each listing costs $0.20 to publish and lasts four months. After that it renews automatically for another $0.20 unless you turn auto-renew off. You're charged whether or not the item sells, but editing a live listing is free.
Listings with more than one in stock work differently. When one sells, the listing renews automatically so the rest stay live, and Etsy charges $0.20 again, plus $0.20 for each extra unit the buyer takes in the same order. In practice, every unit you sell carries its own listing fee, which is how the calculator counts it.
Etsy Offsite Ads fee
Etsy pays to advertise some listings on other websites. If a buyer clicks one of those ads and orders from your shop within 30 days, you pay an Offsite Ads fee on that order:
- 15% if your shop sold under $10,000 USD in the past 365 days. You can opt out at this level.
- 12% once your shop reaches $10,000 USD in sales. From then on, Offsite Ads are mandatory and the rate stays at 12% for the life of the shop, even if sales drop later.
The fee is charged on the item price plus shipping and gift wrap, and it's capped at $100 USD per order. On our $30 plus $5 example, a 15% Offsite Ads sale adds $5.25 and takes total fees to $9.03.
Etsy profit calculator: from fees to real profit
Fill in your item cost and postage cost and the calculator takes them off the payout to show profit. With an item cost entered, it also shows margin (profit as a share of the item price) and ROI (profit against what the item cost you), so it doubles as an Etsy profit margin calculator. Count these as costs:
- Materials or the cost of the item
- Packaging
- The postage label (Etsy has already taken its 6.5% of the shipping you charged)
- Your time, if you count it
A $30 candle that costs $9 to make and $5.50 to post, sold with $5 shipping, leaves $31.23 minus $14.50, so $16.73. That's a 56% margin on the item price and a 186% return on the $9 you spent making it.
Etsy price calculator: working backwards
For a US shop on free shipping with no Offsite Ads, fees are 9.5% of the price plus $0.45. To keep a target amount, add $0.45 and divide by 0.905. To keep $20, list at ($20 + $0.45) ÷ 0.905 = $22.60. Sales tax raises the processing fee slightly, so round up a little for buyers in taxed states.
You can skip the sum. Switch the Etsy fees calculator above to "What price to list at", enter the payout or the profit you want, and it gives you the listing price for your region.
Other Etsy costs
- Shop set-up fee: Etsy's policy says some new shops pay a one-time set-up fee that varies by location. Etsy doesn't publish the amount; it's shown during sign-up.
- Etsy Ads: optional pay-per-click ads on Etsy itself, with a daily budget you set.
- Etsy Plus: optional, $10 USD a month, with listing credits and ad credit included.
- Currency conversion: 2.5% if you list in a currency different from your bank account's. List in your own currency to avoid it.
- Sales tax on fees: in some states, including Texas, Etsy charges sales tax on its seller fees. The calculator doesn't add this.
Etsy fee calculator for Canada
For a Canadian bank account, processing is 3% plus C$0.25 on domestic and US orders, rising to 4% plus C$0.25 on orders from other countries. Canadian shops also pay a regulatory operating fee of 0.50% of the item price plus shipping, cut from 1.15% in 2026. The $0.20 USD listing fee converts to roughly C$0.28. Depending on your province and registration, Etsy also charges GST, HST, PST or QST on its fees, which this calculator doesn't add.
Etsy fee calculator for Australia
Australian shops pay 3% plus A$0.25 on domestic orders and 4% plus A$0.25 on international ones. There's no regulatory operating fee. Etsy's help pages say it adds 10% GST to its fees unless you've given Etsy your ABN for GST purposes, and the listing fee works out at roughly A$0.31. The calculator's Australia setting includes the GST option.
Common questions
What percentage does Etsy take from a sale?
For US shops, 6.5% plus 3% plus $0.25, plus the $0.20 listing fee. On items between $20 and $50 with free shipping, that's roughly 10% to 12% of the price. Offsite Ads sales cost 12% or 15% more.
Does Etsy charge fees on shipping?
Yes. Both the transaction fee and the processing fee include the shipping you charge.
Does Etsy take fees on sales tax?
The 6.5% transaction fee doesn't apply to sales tax for US sellers, but the 3% processing fee does.
Are Etsy fees different in the UK?
Yes: processing is 4% plus £0.20, there's a 0.48% regulatory operating fee, and VAT may be added. See the Etsy UK fee calculator. Selling printables? The digital download fee calculator covers fees without shipping.
