eBay fees in Australia changed on 12 May 2026. If you're based in Australia, don't have an eBay Pro plan and sold A$25,000 or less in the past 12 months, you pay no final value fee at all. The buyer pays a Buyer Protection fee on top of your price instead. Sell a A$50 item and you receive the full A$50.00, while the buyer pays A$3.70 extra.
Sellers above A$25,000 move to an eBay Pro plan, where fees start at 13.4% of the total plus A$0.30 per order. Choose how you sell in the eBay fee calculator for Australia above, and it shows your fees, your payout and what the buyer pays.

Free selling: who qualifies
eBay free selling in Australia applies when all of these are true:
- Your registered address is in Australia.
- You don't have an eBay Pro plan.
- Your sales over the past 12 full calendar months add up to A$25,000 or less, counting item price, postage and tax across all eBay sites.
eBay checks this every month. If you go over A$25,000, it notifies you on the 20th and moves you to Pro Starter from the 1st of the next month. Free selling covers sales to buyers in Australia. You'll generally need to use eBay's postage labels, with exceptions for items under A$20, envelope-sized items and very heavy or long ones.
The eBay Buyer Protection fee in Australia
On items from free-selling sellers, the buyer pays a Buyer Protection fee. It doesn't come out of your payout. It's A$0.30 per item plus a percentage of the item price, worked out in bands:
- 8% of the first A$20
- 6% of the part from A$20 to A$500
- 4% of the part from A$500 to A$5,000
- Nothing on any part above A$5,000
eBay's own examples: a A$10 T-shirt carries a A$1.10 fee, and A$38 headphones carry A$2.98. A A$2,500 handbag carries A$110.70. The most anyone pays is A$210.70 per item, reached at A$5,000. It's charged on the item price only, not postage, and it already includes GST.
The fee still matters to you, because buyers see the total. When a buyer makes an offer, the offer already includes the fee, and you see the amount after it comes off. Price with that in mind, especially on items under A$20 where the fee is the biggest share.
eBay Pro plans and their fees
Pro plans replaced eBay Stores. Starter is free each month; Basic costs A$27.45, Featured A$82.45 and Anchor A$604.95. Every plan pays a final value fee on the total amount of the sale, which includes postage and tax:
- Pro Starter: 13.4% up to A$4,000 per item, then 2.5%, plus A$0.30 per order. eBay's example: a A$20 kitchen item costs A$2.98.
- Basic, Featured and Anchor: rates by category tier, then 2.75% above A$4,000, plus A$0.33 per order. Tier 1 (home appliances, phones, TVs, cameras, consoles) is cheapest, from 8.03% on Basic down to 6.82% on Anchor. Tier 4 (fashion, collectables, media, sporting goods, tech accessories) is the highest, from 13.09% to 11.11%.
On Pro Basic, a A$300 home appliance costs A$24.42 in fees. On Pro Anchor, a A$5,200 sporting goods item costs A$477.73. Pro buyers don't pay the Buyer Protection fee, so your listed price is what they pay before postage.
A paid plan only pays off at volume. Compare the monthly cost with the fee you'd save against Starter's 13.4% on your usual sales.
What you keep at common prices
Free selling versus Pro Starter, with no postage. On free selling you keep the whole price and the buyer pays the Buyer Protection fee on top:
| Sale price | Free selling: you keep | Buyer pays on top | Pro Starter fees | Pro Starter: you keep |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A$10.00 | A$10.00 | A$1.10 | A$1.64 | A$8.36 |
| A$20.00 | A$20.00 | A$1.90 | A$2.98 | A$17.02 |
| A$50.00 | A$50.00 | A$3.70 | A$7.00 | A$43.00 |
| A$100.00 | A$100.00 | A$6.70 | A$13.70 | A$86.30 |
| A$500.00 | A$500.00 | A$30.70 | A$67.30 | A$432.70 |
The gap is the 13.4% that free selling skips, which makes staying under the A$25,000 line worth a lot to a casual seller.
Selling overseas, ads and surcharges
- International sales fee: 3% of the total for free-selling sellers and 1.1% on Pro plans, when the delivery address is outside Australia. A A$100 sale to an overseas buyer costs a free seller A$3.00.
- Promoted Listings: an ad rate you choose, from 2% to 100% of the total sale, charged only if the buyer clicked the ad and bought within 30 days.
- Below Standard: an extra 5.5% of the total sale, or 6.6% after four months in a row. It applies even to free sellers.
- Currency conversion: 3%, rising to 3.25% on 1 November 2026.
Australia has no Top Rated Plus discount on fees. Vehicles have their own flat fees.
Common questions
Is selling on eBay free in Australia?
For most private sellers, yes. If you're based in Australia, have no Pro plan and sell A$25,000 or less a year, there's no final value fee. The buyer pays the Buyer Protection fee instead.
How much does eBay take from a A$50 sale?
Nothing on free selling, and the buyer pays A$3.70 on top. On Pro Starter it's A$7.00, leaving you A$43.00.
Who pays the eBay Buyer Protection fee in Australia?
The buyer, on items from free-selling sellers. It's refunded in proportion if you refund part of an order.
How does this compare with the UK and Canada?
The UK also lets private sellers sell free, with a buyer fee, but the bands differ. Canada charges every seller 13.6% plus a per-order fee. The eBay UK and eBay Canada calculators cover them, and Depop's Australian fees are on its own page.
