Depop vs Mercari: Fees, Payouts and Where to Sell

Mercari takes 10% of each sale. Depop has no selling fee, only payment processing, unless you boost. Put in your price and see what each app sends you.

On a normal sale, Depop leaves you more. Sell a $50 item with no shipping added and Depop keeps $2.10 in payment processing, so you get $47.90. Mercari keeps $5.00 and you get $45.00. Boosting on Depop flips that, so the Depop vs Mercari answer depends on how you sell.

Type your price into the calculator above. Add what you paid for the item and your postage cost if you cover shipping, and it shows profit on both apps and what each buyer pays at checkout.

Depop vs Mercari fees, side by side

  • Depop: no selling fee for US sellers since 18 July 2024. Payment processing is 3.3% plus $0.45 per order, on the item, buyer-paid shipping and any sales tax. A boosted sale adds 12% of the item price.
  • Mercari: a 10% selling fee on the item price plus any shipping the buyer pays. No processing fee since January 6, 2025. Instant Pay costs $3 per cash-out; direct deposit is free.
  • What buyers pay: Depop buyers pay a Marketplace fee of up to 5% of the item price plus up to $1. Mercari buyers pay a 3.6% Buyer Protection fee on the item plus shipping.

Here's what each one pays you at common prices, with no shipping, tax, boosting or Instant Pay:

Sale priceDepop feeDepop pays youMercari feeMercari pays you
$6.00$0.65$5.35$0.60$5.40
$10.00$0.78$9.22$1.00$9.00
$25.00$1.28$23.73$2.50$22.50
$50.00$2.10$47.90$5.00$45.00
$100.00$3.75$96.25$10.00$90.00
$250.00$8.70$241.30$25.00$225.00

Standard settings, free shipping to the buyer, no sales tax.

The gap grows with the price. At $100, Depop pays $96.25 and Mercari pays $90.00. Only on very cheap items does Mercari come out ahead: on a $6 sale Depop's fixed $0.45 makes its fee $0.65, against Mercari's $0.60.

When Mercari beats Depop: boosted sales

Boosting is where Depop gets expensive. If that $50 sale came through a boosted listing, Depop adds 12% of the item price, so fees jump to $8.10 and you keep $41.90. Mercari would have paid you $45.00.

Depop only charges boosting if a buyer saw or tapped your boosted listing and bought within 28 days. Boost a few slow items and your average fee stays low. Boost your whole shop and Mercari's flat 10% may be the cheaper of the two.

How shipping changes the comparison

Both apps charge their fee on the shipping the buyer pays. On a $50 item with $8 buyer-paid shipping, Depop takes $2.36 and pays you $55.64, which includes the $8 for your label. Mercari takes $5.80 and pays you $44.20, because it handles the label money itself. The Mercari buyer pays $60.09 in total once the Buyer Protection fee is added.

If you offer free shipping on either app, you buy the label yourself. Enter its cost as "Your postage cost" in the calculator and the profit line takes it off for both.

Mercari vs Depop: who each one suits

Depop suits clothing with a look. Vintage, streetwear, Y2K and one-off fashion sell well, and the buyers are mostly younger shoppers browsing by style. Photos and styling matter more than on most apps.

Mercari suits almost everything else. Electronics, toys, games, home goods, collectibles and plain everyday clothing all sell there. Buyers search for specific items, and the flat 10% is easy to price around.

So if you're asking Depop or Mercari for a vintage jacket, Depop usually wins on both fees and buyers. For a games console or a kitchen mixer, Mercari is the better fit even with the higher fee, because that's where those buyers are.

Listing on both

Many clothing sellers cross-list on Depop and Mercari and take whichever sale comes first. That works, but set each price with its own fee in mind. On a $50 tag, Mercari keeps $5.00 where Depop keeps $2.10, so the same price pays you less on Mercari. Some sellers add a dollar or two to their Mercari price to even it out.

Keep an eye on boosting too. If an item is boosted on Depop and also listed on Mercari, a Mercari sale may actually leave you more. When an item sells on one app, remove it from the other quickly so you don't sell it twice.

Depop vs Poshmark vs Mercari

For clothing, sellers often weigh all three. On a $50 sale with no extras, Depop pays $47.90, Mercari $45.00 and Poshmark $40.00, because Poshmark takes 20%. Poshmark can still win when its buyers pay more for a brand. The Depop vs Poshmark and Poshmark vs Mercari pages compare the other pairs, and the all-platform comparison has every app on one table.
