eBay vs Poshmark: Fees, Payouts and Where to Sell Clothes

Poshmark keeps 20% of most sales. eBay keeps 13.6% of the whole order, shipping and tax included, plus $0.40. Put in your price and see which one sends you more.

On fees alone, eBay leaves you more. Sell a $50 dress with free shipping and eBay keeps $7.20, so $42.80 reaches you. Poshmark keeps $10.00 and sends you $40.00. That's the Poshmark vs eBay fee story in one sale: eBay charges 13.6% plus $0.40, Poshmark charges a flat 20%.

Poshmark vs eBay fees, side by side

  • eBay (US): a final value fee of 13.6% in most clothing and shoe categories, charged on the total the buyer pays. That total includes the shipping you charge and the sales tax. On top of that, $0.40 per order, or $0.30 when the order is $10 or less.
  • Poshmark: a flat $2.95 on sales under $15, and 20% of the sale price from $15 up. No listing fee, no processing fee, and the fee is never charged on shipping or tax.
  • What buyers pay: on both, the price, shipping and any sales tax. Neither adds a separate buyer fee.

Here's what each one pays you at common prices, with free shipping and no tax:

$250.00$34.40$215.60$50.00$200.00

The gap is widest on cheap pieces. A $10 top costs $1.66 on eBay, leaving $8.34. On Poshmark the flat fee is $2.95 and you keep $7.05. From $15 up, Poshmark's 20% is always more than eBay's 13.6% plus $0.40, so eBay wins on fees at every price.

Is it better to sell on eBay or Poshmark?

For the money you keep per sale, eBay. But the better app is the one where your item sells, and at a good price. That depends on what you're selling.

Poshmark suits clothing, shoes and bags. The whole app is built around fashion. Buyers search by brand and size, send offers, and bundle several items from one closet. If a jacket sells for $70 on Poshmark and only $55 on eBay, Poshmark still pays you more even after its 20%.

eBay suits almost everything, including clothes. It has far more buyers, and that reach helps with odd sizes, men's clothing, workwear and vintage pieces. It also handles electronics, collectibles and household items, which Poshmark doesn't really cover.

So is Poshmark better than eBay? For a seller who only sells women's fashion and wants things simple, often yes. For anyone selling a mix of items, or chasing the lowest fee, eBay usually comes out ahead. Plenty of sellers list on both and take whichever sale comes first.

Shipping: where eBay's fee grows

eBay charges its 13.6% on the shipping you charge as well. On a $40 item with $8 buyer-paid shipping, eBay's fee is $6.93, worked out on $48. Poshmark's fee on the same $40 item is $8.00, and shipping isn't part of it.

Poshmark's shipping is the simpler of the two. The buyer pays for a prepaid label, Poshmark emails it to you, and you only pay extra if the box is over 5 lb or you offer a shipping discount. On eBay you pick the carrier, set the price, and buy the label. That's more control, but also more to get wrong. If you offer free shipping on eBay, enter the label cost as "Your postage cost" in the calculator so the profit line takes it off.

Sales tax works the same way on eBay. A $50 sale where the buyer pays 8% tax is charged on $54, so the fee is $7.74 rather than $7.20. Poshmark never charges its fee on tax.

Selling clothes on eBay vs Poshmark: a few traps

  • Poshmark's $15 line. At $14 you keep $11.05, and at $15 you keep $12.00. Pricing just under $15 rarely helps. Bundles pay one fee for the whole order, which helps with cheap items.
  • Offers on both apps. The fee comes off the price you accept, not the price you listed. Work out your floor price before offers start coming in.
  • eBay Promoted Listings. If a sale comes through a promoted ad, your ad rate is added on top of the 13.6%. A 5% rate takes most of eBay's fee advantage away, so put the rate into the calculator before you turn ads on.
  • eBay's per-order fee. It's fixed, so on a $10 sale the $0.30 is a noticeable slice. It still costs less than Poshmark's $2.95.

Selling on Poshmark vs eBay: how to decide

  1. Check sold listings (not asking prices) for the same item on both apps.
  2. Put each sold price through the calculator above, with your item cost and any postage you'd pay.
  3. Pick the higher profit. If it's close, pick the app where the item sells faster.
