For a UK private seller, Vinted and eBay pay you the same: the full price. Sell a £20 top on either and £20.00 is yours. The Vinted vs eBay difference is on the buyer's side. eBay adds a Buyer Protection fee of £1.50 to that £20 item, while Vinted's fee on it is typically around £1.70. A cheaper checkout can help your item sell, so that small gap still matters.
Type your price into the calculator above. Add what you paid for the item and your postage cost if you cover it, to see profit and what the buyer pays on each site.
Vinted vs eBay fees, side by side
- Vinted: sellers pay nothing on a standard sale. The buyer pays the Vinted fee (called Buyer Protection until October 2026), which Vinted says is usually 3% to 8% of the price plus 30p to 80p, plus postage.
- eBay, private sellers: no final value fee and no regulatory operating fee on UK sales since October 2024. Items carry a Buyer Protection fee paid by the buyer: 10p plus 7% of the first £20, 4% from £20 to £300 and 2% from £300 to £4,000.
- eBay, business sellers: a final value fee of 9.9% to 12.9% depending on the category, plus 30p or 40p per order and a 0.35% regulatory operating fee, with VAT on top. Vinted has its own Pro accounts for businesses, which this page doesn't cover.
Here's what each one pays a private seller, and what the eBay buyer fee comes to, at common prices:
| Sale price | Vinted fee | Vinted pays you | eBay fee | eBay pays you |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| £5.00 | £0.00 | £5.00 | £0.00 | £5.00 |
| £10.00 | £0.00 | £10.00 | £0.00 | £10.00 |
| £20.00 | £0.00 | £20.00 | £0.00 | £20.00 |
| £50.00 | £0.00 | £50.00 | £0.00 | £50.00 |
| £100.00 | £0.00 | £100.00 | £0.00 | £100.00 |
| £300.00 | £0.00 | £300.00 | £0.00 | £300.00 |
Standard settings, free shipping to the buyer, no sales tax.
The payout columns match because neither site takes anything from you. The calculator above shows the buyer's side: eBay's fee is usually a little lower than Vinted's middle estimate, and the gap widens on dearer items. On a £300 coat, eBay's Buyer Protection fee is £12.70, while a mid-range Vinted fee would be about £15.70.
Why the buyer fee still matters to you
Buyers compare totals, not your listed price. A slightly lower fee makes your item cheaper at checkout without costing you anything. On a £10 item, a Vinted buyer pays somewhere between £10.60 and £11.60 before postage. On eBay it's £10.80.
Vinted doesn't publish the exact rule that picks its rate, only the range, so the calculator uses the middle of it. Each Vinted listing shows its own fee breakdown if you want the exact figure.
Postage when selling on Vinted vs eBay
Postage works differently, and it's often the bigger cost. On Vinted the buyer picks a carrier and pays for postage at checkout, and you get a prepaid label, so postage never touches your earnings.
On eBay you set the postage price. The buyer pays it to you, and you buy the label. Charge £3.50 postage on a £20 item and £23.50 lands in your account, out of which you pay for the label. Get the postage price wrong and you lose the difference, so weigh items before you list.
Is it better to sell on Vinted or eBay?
On fees it's a draw for private sellers, so it comes down to what you sell and how you want to sell it.
Vinted suits clothes, shoes and accessories. It's built for second-hand fashion, buyers browse by brand and size, and listing takes a minute. Postage is simple because the buyer sorts it out. It's a natural fit for clearing a wardrobe.
eBay suits almost everything else. Electronics, collectables, parts, books and homeware all sell well there, and auctions can help rare items find their price. eBay gives you 300 free listings a month as a private seller, then 35p each, which is plenty for most people.
Lots of sellers list clothes on both. If you do, keep the same price on each and take whichever sale comes first, since neither site will charge you a selling fee.
When eBay starts charging you
The free deal on eBay is for private sellers selling to UK buyers. Fees apply in a few cases:
- Selling as a business. A £40 dress from a business seller who isn't VAT-registered costs £6.36 in fees with VAT, leaving £33.64.
- Overseas buyers. A 3% international fee applies when the delivery address is outside the UK.
- Promoted Listings. If a sale comes from an ad click, you pay your chosen rate plus VAT.
- More than 300 listings a month without an eBay Shop.
The eBay UK fee calculator covers business rates by category, and the Vinted fee calculator shows the full buyer fee range.
Common questions
eBay vs Vinted: which is cheaper to sell on?

Can I sell the same item on Vinted and eBay?
