eBay Fee Calculator (US)

Enter your sale price and shipping to see exactly what eBay takes and what lands in your account. Rates are checked against eBay's own fee pages.

For most categories, eBay takes 13.6% of the total sale, including the shipping and sales tax the buyer pays, plus $0.40 per order. On a $50 item with free shipping and no tax, that's $7.20 in fees and $42.80 to you.

Type your numbers into the eBay calculator above and pick a category if yours isn't the standard one. Add what you paid for the item and your postage cost and it becomes an eBay profit calculator too, showing profit, margin and ROI next to your payout.

How much does eBay take?

eBay takes 13.6% of the order total plus $0.40 per order in most categories, or $0.30 when the order is $10 or less. Anything else comes from ads, international buyers or a poor seller rating.

  • Final value fee: 13.6% of the total amount of the sale, up to $7,500 per item. Anything above $7,500 is charged at 2.35%.
  • Per-order fee: $0.40 when the order total is over $10, or $0.30 when it's $10 or less.

The catch most new sellers miss is the word "total". eBay's fee base is the item price plus the shipping you charge, plus any handling charge, plus the sales tax eBay collects from the buyer. You never see that tax money, but you still pay 13.6% on it.

How to calculate eBay fees by hand

Here's a full example using eBay's own method. You sell a $100 item, charge $10 shipping, and the buyer pays $8 sales tax.

  1. Add it all up: $100 + $10 + $8 = $118.
  2. Final value fee: 13.6% of $118 = $16.05.
  3. Per-order fee: the order is over $10, so add $0.40. Total fees: $16.45.
  4. What you keep: you receive the $110 for the item and shipping (eBay passes the tax to the state), minus $16.45, which leaves $93.55. Then pay for the shipping label out of that.

If that same sale came through a 5% Promoted Listings ad, add 5% of $118 ($5.90), so fees rise to $22.35. The eBay fees calculator at the top runs these same steps, with sales tax entered as a percentage.

eBay fees per category

About a dozen categories don't use 13.6%. The ones resellers ask about most:

  • Most categories, including vinyl records: 13.6% up to $7,500, then 2.35%
  • Trading cards, comics, coins and paper money: 13.25% up to $7,500, then 2.35%
  • Books, magazines, movies, TV and music (not vinyl): 15.3% up to $7,500, then 2.35%
  • Guitars and basses: 6.7% up to $7,500, then 2.35% (compare Reverb's fees for gear)
  • Athletic shoes under $150: 13.6% plus the per-order fee
  • Athletic shoes at $150 or more: 8% of the whole total, no per-order fee
  • Watches, parts and accessories: 15% up to $1,000, 6.5% from $1,000 to $7,500, 3% above

Books and DVDs are the surprise for a lot of people: at 15.3% they pay more than almost anything else on eBay. Card sellers get the small discount covered on the eBay trading card fee calculator. Jewelry, handbags, bullion and heavy equipment have their own tiers too, so check eBay's selling fees page if you deal in those. For the categories above, choosing one in the calculator switches the rate, so it works as an eBay final value fee calculator for books, guitars or watches as well as everyday items.

Sneakers and athletic shoes

Athletic shoes have a cliff at $150. Below it, you pay the normal 13.6% plus $0.40. At $150 or above, the rate drops to 8% of the whole sale with no per-order fee, and listing is free if your starting or Buy It Now price is $150 or more.

That makes a $140 pair cost you $19.44 in fees (you keep $120.56), while a $160 pair costs only $12.80 (you keep $147.20). If your shoes are hovering around $140, pricing them at $150 or a bit higher can leave you with noticeably more money. To use the page as an eBay fee calculator for sneakers, pick "Athletic shoes" as the category and watch the switch happen at $150.

Does eBay charge fees on shipping?

Yes. The 13.6% final value fee is charged on whatever shipping you charge the buyer, not just the item price. A $40 item with $5 shipping costs $6.52 in fees, not the $5.84 you'd pay on the item alone. If you offer free shipping instead and roll the postage into the price, the fee is the same either way; it's the total that counts.

One detail from eBay's fee page: if you offer a pricier option such as one-day or international shipping alongside a cheaper domestic service, eBay uses the cheapest domestic option for the shipping part of the fee. This is an eBay fee calculator with shipping built in: enter what the buyer pays for shipping and it goes into the fee, then put your label cost in "Your postage cost" to see what's left as profit.

eBay Promoted Listings fee

Promoted Listings General (the cost-per-sale kind, previously called Standard) lets you choose an ad rate. You only pay it if the buyer clicked your promoted listing and bought within 30 days. When that happens, eBay charges your rate on the same total as the final value fee, including shipping and tax.

So a 10% ad rate on a $50 sale with no shipping or tax adds $5 to the $7.20, making $12.20 in fees and 24% of the price gone. Add shipping or tax and the ad fee grows with them. Before you turn an ad on, type the rate into the Promoted Listings box. That makes the page an eBay Promoted Listings fee calculator, and you can see the ad fee as its own line.

Top Rated Plus discount

US-based Top Rated sellers get 10% off the percentage part of the final value fee on listings that qualify for Top Rated Plus. The listing needs same-day or one-business-day handling and free returns of 30 days or longer. The discount turns 13.6% into 12.24%. It doesn't touch the $0.40 per-order fee. On the $118 example above, fees drop from $16.45 to $14.84.

eBay insertion fee and other charges

  • Insertion fee: you get 250 zero-insertion-fee listings a month (more with an eBay Store). After that, each listing costs $0.35 per category, including relists and each monthly renewal of a Good 'Til Cancelled listing. It isn't refunded if the item doesn't sell. Guitars and basses list free.
  • International fee: 1.65% of the total when the buyer is outside the US and you don't use eBay International Shipping.
  • Below Standard surcharge: an extra 6 percentage points on the final value fee if your seller rating drops to Below Standard, rising to 7 after four months in a row.
  • Currency conversion: 3% when eBay converts currency for you, going up to 3.25% on 14 October 2026.
This eBay selling fees calculator uses eBay's standard rates. If you pay for an eBay Store, your final value fee can be lower in many categories, so your real fees may come in under these numbers.

Thinking about Mercari instead? Its fee is a flat 10% with no per-order charge, and the eBay vs Mercari comparison shows both payouts for the same price.

Selling on eBay.co.uk instead? UK private sellers pay no final value fee at all, and business sellers have their own rates and VAT, so use the eBay UK fee calculator for those sales.

Reverse eBay fee calculator: what to list at

Switch the calculator to "What price to list at", type the payout or profit you want, and it works backwards to a list price. By hand: to keep a set amount after fees, divide the amount you want plus $0.40 by 0.864 (that's 1 minus 13.6%). Want $50 in hand on a free-shipping item with no tax? $50.40 ÷ 0.864 = $58.33. Check it: 13.6% of $58.33 is $7.93, plus $0.40 is $8.33, and $58.33 minus $8.33 leaves $50.

Sales tax nudges this up because eBay charges on the tax too, so add a little headroom for buyers in high-tax states.

Common questions

Is the eBay fee 13.6% or 13.25%?

Both: 13.6% for most categories and 13.25% for trading cards, coins and paper money. eBay raised most categories from 13.25% to 13.6% on 14 February 2025, and those three were left where they were.

Does eBay take fees from sales tax?

Yes. eBay charges its 13.6% on the sales tax the buyer pays too, even though the tax itself goes to the state.

When is the per-order fee $0.30 instead of $0.40?

When the order total is $10 or less. The total includes shipping and tax, so a $9.50 item with $1 shipping is over the line and pays $0.40.

Is this eBay fee calculator up to date for 2026?

Yes. It uses 13.6% plus $0.40 for most categories, with the category, Promoted Listings and Top Rated Plus options, and the rates were last checked against eBay's own pages on the date shown below. You can see how that works on how we check fees and see past changes in the fee change log.
